A boat may stay in water, but water should not stay in boat. A spiritual aspirant may live in the world, but the world should not live within him.

— Ramakrishna

This is such a striking image—like the idea that while we live in the world, we don’t have to let it define or consume us. The water in the boat represents the distractions, attachments, and emotions that can weigh us down. As long as the water stays outside the boat, it remains afloat and free, able to move with the flow. Similarly, we can interact with the world and experience it, but we don’t need to let its chaos or materialism infiltrate our hearts or minds.

It's a beautiful metaphor for spiritual detachment—not to reject the world, but to be in it without being of it. Like a tree that stands rooted in the earth yet is not consumed by it. This kind of detachment doesn’t mean abandoning the world or its responsibilities, but rather cultivating a deep inner peace and equanimity, no matter what’s happening around us.
